Being shot at trumps being hit by lightening!

We came home yesterday to find a strange car in front of the garage.  DH went into the house and saw that it had been trashed.  He was standing by the strange car calling 911 and a guy stood up on the other side of our car, raised his gun and shot at DH and then took off running across a field into the woods..  Luckily he missed.. Every drawer had been dumped and cupboards had been ransacked and all our suitcases were loaded with what they were going to steal.

The county sheriffs were immediate and wonderful.  They used dogs and were able to track the one with the gun. The second one got away even though the police had a helicopter looking and they are coming back this morning with the dogs. The thieves had planned to steal our truck also as they had started to load it with stuff.  Even this morning I shudder thinking of it and I couldn't sleep last night thinking of another out there.  It turns out the strange car was also stolen and the captured guy was high on drugs.

It was a pitiful effort on their part as we have little of any real value... The two most valuable things I own are my two featherweights and they are untouched.....but the fact that the guy was willing to shoot at DH was and is still terrifying.  Even though I'm sure the second guy is long gone I am hesitant to walk in my forest this morning.  If we'd come 1/2 hour later they would have been gone with our truck and everything else...

  2. Dearest Gerry, I am so glad you and DH are alright, tho understandably shaken. What a terrifying experience. What a blessing to still have your health, and all your things too. Wishing you peace and comfort. Suzie in Idaho

  6. Oh my goodness Gerry, how awful, I can't imagine how you feel.
Luckily guns are not prolific over here in u.k. but no doubt they will be eventually.
It will take a bit of time to forget but I'm sure it must be a one of.

  7. OMGosh!! I'm so glad you DID come home and that the guy was a poor shot.

the same thing happened to a friend of mine about 10 years ago. they never caught the guys that we know of, though they probably vandalized more than her house.

Does it make you wonder why you came home a few minutes earlier than later...or why they took just a little too long and you came home or wonder why your husband wasn't standing just a little to the left or to the right?

I wonder about these things in life's happenstances. I'm certainly glad this turned out OK for you, even if you have to clean the ransacked house.

  8. This is just too horrible!
Please know there are many people in this world that love you and wish you nothing but the very best.

  9. Well, thank goodness the guy missed Ron! I can`t begin to imagine going through being shot at. Damn druggies with their guns! So glad you are both OK and nothing was ultimately stolen, although I’m sure you have a lot of work ahead of you to clean up and restore everything.

Have you thought about a simple home security system? How did Morris and Molly seem after the break-in?

I hope you both can eventually relax and get back to your pre-violated peace of mind. Hugs to you both. Cathy

  10. Oh my goodness!!! I am so very grateful that neither of you were injured and that they caught at least one of the guys. That means catching the other should be a bit easier. So scary.

  11. I am so sorry this happened to you. We had our home broken into and many keepsakes stolen. My mother was working in her front yard and had a man pull a gun on her wanting her car in the driveway. Luckily a neighbor was quick to see what was happening. It is a scary world we live in.

  13. Wow! How awful to imagine your wonderful spot with guns blazing. So glad to know you are both OK.

Hopefully time will ease the memory so you can again enjoy your home and forest. Sending along big hugs .... love,

  15. what an ordeal, bad enough to have these nasty men trying to steal your posessions but to have shot at DH thank God he missed and he was not injured. Good that the police caught the one with a gun, now you have all that mess to sort out and as you say come to terms with what has happened and feel safe again in your home.

  16. So frightening!

I came home to that same thing -- all my stuff "staged" ready to be loaded up and thieves in the house. I was not shot at.

Your poor hubby. I hope his nerves (and yours) have calmed down.

  17. Oh, my goodness! I'm so very sorry, but grateful for the outcome. To be violated in such a frightening way is unconscionable. You both are in my prayers. Jan Myhre, Spokane

  18. Yikes! Glad you are OK & hope the criminals get their just desserts, swiftly. When the shakes subside & you can look on the bright side, you might deal with your experience creatively. Could you be inspired to create a "Crime & Punishment" CQ piece?

  19. Oh Gerry what a horrible thing to happen !!!I am so glad you and DH are OK. It will take along time to relax and feel safe again I expect. My daughter was robbed a few years ago and she said she felt like someone had taken part of her life. We were thankful that my granddaughter didn't come home during the robbery. I hate to think of what might have happened. I am praying for you and sending lots of hugs. Ruth in Arizona

  20. Oh Gerry. It is so scary to hear that your hubby was shot at, but I'm so relieved that he wasn't hit. Hopefully they will get the second person, so you can breath easier.
When someone ransacks your home, it is like you like you yourself were violated. Your home is your sanctuary, and thinking about someone being in there and going through all your things is just awful.
I am sorry that you came home to such a mess to clean up.
May God Bless you both, and keep you safe.

  21. That is very scary Gerry. I'm so sorry you had to experience it. I came home to a break in when I was a young mother. I remember feeling so violated. Makes me sick of you feeling this way. They are long gone -- don't let them steal your joy.

  22. How are the dogs? That wasn't my first thought, of course, I am thankful the guy was a poor shot and that you're both okay (traumatized, though, I'm sure), and that they didn't get away with your stuff. Hugs to all four of you, Janet

  23. I am so glad you are both safe. Yesterday, I nearly watched a tragedy. I learned some of the greatest blessings are the ones that do not happen, even if they leave us shaken up. I am so thankful the shot missed your DH. I will be praying for closure - by finding the second man - and piece of mind.

  24. I'm so sorry. It's terrifying to be shot at...I can relate to that. I'm happy that you and DH are unharmed. How are your pets?

  25. I had missed this post and had to go back in your Archive and hunt it up! So scary! So So Sorry for the mess they caused but so grateful as you are that no one was hurt!

  26. Oh Gerry, what an awful thing to have happen! It's such a violation.
Thank goodness no one was hurt.

  27. SOO glad you're both OK. Your guardian angels were with you no doubt. I'm sure you're still recovering and putting everything to rights. What a mess and a horror and a violation. When my Mom was robbed, it took her many many months to sleep peacefully and not feel afraid. I'm sending you calm feelings of safety. You are a rock.
